Moxibustion (艾灸)
Thermal action of smoldering mugwort on acupuncture points — part of TCM support for warming, regulating qi, and strengthening the constitution.
How the procedure works
Moxibustion (艾灸) is a TCM method that uses thermal action of smoldering mugwort (moxa, 艾) on acupuncture points and zones. Unlike acupuncture, which works mechanically, moxibustion works through heat — creating a distinctive "qi warming" effect that is especially useful in patterns of "yang deficiency" and constitutional weakness in TCM. The method has a thousand-year history in traditional Chinese medicine, and in modern pediatric practice it is delivered in an adapted, safe format under specialist supervision.
At the H&B Neurolife International Rehabilitation Center (Shangrao), moxibustion is delivered as part of TCM support within the overall program. It most often works alongside acupuncture, Tui Na massage and, when indicated, herbal medicine — methods that complement each other. Typical indications: TCM patterns of qi deficiency, "cold" type, spleen-stomach weakness; digestive disorders, poor appetite, "food stagnation"; low immunity and frequent colds; enuresis in children of the "cold" type; restless sleep and general weakness; the recovery period of cerebral palsy and post-encephalopathic conditions. Indications are selected individually by TCM pattern differentiation.
Strengths of the method at the center: part of comprehensive TCM support together with acupuncture, Tui Na massage, and herbal medicine; delivered in pediatric practice under professional supervision — in a format adapted for children; suitable for long-term supportive work in "cold"-type TCM patterns.
What matters for parents
Moxibustion is delivered by physician's decision, in a format adapted for children and under specialist supervision. Self-administered moxibustion at home without preparation and consultation is not acceptable — there is a risk of burns and incorrect point selection. The method does not replace Western treatment of somatic conditions; it works in addition, as part of TCM support.
TCM consultation and pattern differentiation
The TCM physician evaluates the child's constitution according to traditional Chinese medicine principles (tongue, pulse, examination), identifying patterns of qi deficiency, "cold" type, or "spleen-stomach weakness."
Selection of individualized points and warming zones
Points and zones for warming are selected for the child. Age, state, and heat tolerance are taken into account. Intensity and duration of the action are selected accordingly.
Sessions in a child-appropriate format
Sessions are delivered under continuous specialist supervision: gentle warming of acupuncture points with smoldering mugwort, without direct skin contact or with protection. The child's sensations are monitored.
Integration with other TCM and center methods
Moxibustion works alongside acupuncture and Tui Na massage and, when indicated, with herbal medicine and rehabilitation courses.
Progress monitoring and decision on a repeat course
Regular evaluation of response, adjustment of the plan; at the end of the course — recommendations for a break and a repeat course if needed.
