ASD with co-occurring conditions
Also known as: ASD with comorbidities, Autism with GI disorders, Autism with sleep disturbances, Autism with epilepsy
A program for children with ASD and co-occurring conditions - gastrointestinal disorders, poor sleep, epilepsy, inflammatory processes, food intolerance. At H&B Neurolife, these cases are managed comprehensively: the rehabilitation core works alongside biomedical care and nutritional support.
What is ASD with co-occurring conditions?
ASD with co-occurring conditions refers to cases where the autism spectrum disorder core is accompanied by gastrointestinal disorders, sleep disturbances, epilepsy, inflammatory processes, or food intolerance. Such conditions are common and frequently become the reason that standard rehabilitation "spins its wheels": the child cannot consistently engage in sessions because of physical discomfort, poor sleep, or emotional instability driven by dysbiosis.
At H&B Neurolife International Rehabilitation Center (Shangrao), such cases are managed comprehensively. In parallel with rehabilitation training, the biomedical track is active: precision gut microbiota testing, personalized probiotics and nutritional intervention, restoration of the intestinal barrier, and regulation of the gut-brain axis. Where indicated, stem cells (anti-inflammatory effect, restoration of neural networks), neuroregulation, and physician-prescribed medication support are added. TCM methods - pediatric acupuncture, Tui Na massage, and, when needed, Chinese herbal medicine - strengthen the body and regulate digestion and sleep.
What parents should know
When enrolling in the program, it is important to inform our specialists about all co-occurring conditions: what medications the child is taking, how often epileptic seizures occur (if any), which foods trigger reactions, and how the child sleeps. This allows us to design the plan more precisely and avoid contraindications. Severe decompensated conditions, frequent seizures, acute infections, fever above 37.1 °C, and severe skin diseases require prior stabilization in a specialized clinic - only then can a rehabilitation course begin.
When the child's physical baseline is stable - sleep is steady, digestion is in order, inflammation is under control - the GROW program and rehabilitation courses produce visibly better results. The center's approach is built on exactly this combination: "medicine + rehabilitation + family."
Causes
Comorbidities in ASD are common and often stall rehabilitation: GI disorders, dysbiosis, and inflammation sustain irritability and poor sleep via the gut-brain axis. Epilepsy needs separate evaluation.
Symptoms
On top of ASD features: constipation, diarrhea, food selectivity; restless sleep and night awakenings; irritability and outbursts; frequent colds; with comorbid epilepsy — seizures.
Diagnostics
Beyond developmental assessment (PEP, Gesell, ABC), the center runs precision microbiota testing with personalized probiotics and diet. If epilepsy is suspected, a specialist examines the child and the program is coordinated with anticonvulsant therapy.
Prognosis and treatment approach
Once digestion, sleep, and inflammation are controlled, ASD rehabilitation yields noticeably better outcomes. The lead line is stem cells and microbiota regulation, with the child working in the GROW program in parallel.
