Cognitive Developmental Delay
Also known as: Cognitive delay, Delayed cognitive development, Weak comprehension in children
Cognitive developmental delay program for children aged 1–14 years at H&B Neurolife (Shangrao). A staged cognitive training course supported by ABA, TEACCH, sensory integration, and device-based therapy (TMS, auditory integration).
What is Cognitive Developmental Delay?
Cognitive developmental delay is a delay in the child's development of attention, comprehension, observation, logical thinking, and conceptual foundations. Children with this delay typically show poor attention and restlessness, blurry foundational concepts (size, color, shape, quantity), weak logic and slow reactions, and difficulty understanding instructions and cause-and-effect relationships. Cognitive delay can occur in isolation or as part of global developmental delay, ASD, intellectual disability, or sequelae of encephalopathy.
At H&B Neurolife International Rehabilitation Center (Shangrao), the cognitive training course is one of the foundational pillars of the rehabilitation program. The principle is «comprehension before expression»: the child must first understand (instructions, concepts, relationships), and only then can expressive speech, socialization, learning, and self-care be built. The course is staged — from simple to complex — in a narrative play-based, multisensory format (vision + hearing + touch). Working in parallel: ABA (developing attention, instruction-following, progress tracking), TEACCH (structured environment, visual cues, reduced anxiety), and sensory integration as a sensory foundation. Where indicated, TMS, Tomatis auditory integration, and TCM methods are added.
What Parents Should Know
Progress on cognitive functions is tracked in data — this makes change visible and allows the program to be adjusted. Home-based rehabilitation (at least 1 hour per day) is a required part of the course: specialists provide specific exercises and games the parent uses with the child between sessions at the center.
Causes
May occur in isolation or as part of global developmental delay, ASD, intellectual disability, or encephalopathy. Sensory integration and emotional regulation difficulties often co-occur.
Symptoms
Poor attention and restlessness, weak logic and slow reactions, blurry foundational concepts (size, color, shape), and difficulty understanding instructions and cause-and-effect.
Assessment
PEP and the Gesell scale are used; with ASD comorbidity — ABC and Shuangxi. Attention, instruction comprehension, and concept mastery are assessed; the plan fits the child's baseline.
Prognosis and Treatment Approach
The cognitive training course is foundational: «comprehension before expression». Staged play-based sessions develop attention, comprehension, and thinking — the basis for speech, learning, and self-care.
