Global Developmental Delay
Also known as: GDD, Global delay, Mixed developmental disorder, Generalized developmental lag
Global developmental delay program for children aged 1–14 years at H&B Neurolife International Rehabilitation Center (Shangrao). Built on the staged GROW system and a biomedical core, with a structured assessment — the plan is shaped by the child's actual developmental stage, not chronological age.
What is Global Developmental Delay?
Global developmental delay (GDD) is a condition in which the child simultaneously lags behind age norms across several domains: speech, motor function, cognition, and the emotional and social spheres. Unlike autism spectrum disorders, in GDD the order of developmental stages is usually preserved — the child passes through the same milestones, only later than peers and at a slower pace. Early systematic intervention substantially affects prognosis: the sooner correction begins, the greater the child's chances of «catching up» to norms or developing selected domains to a level sufficient for adaptation in kindergarten and school.
At H&B Neurolife International Rehabilitation Center (Shangrao), the GDD program is built around the logic of the staged GROW system. Children are assigned to stages not by chronological age but by their actual level of psychological development: the child works on what matches their current stage. The core foundation includes cognitive training, speech and oral-motor development, sensory integration, occupational therapy, and 1:1 individual sessions. In parallel, the biomedical direction is engaged — neuroregulation, stem cell therapy where indicated, nutritional and vitamin-mineral support — alongside TCM methods (acupuncture, Tui Na) to strengthen the body and normalize sleep and digestion.
What Parents Should Know
After the initial assessment (Gesell, PEP; GMFM for motor symptoms; S-S for speech), specialists compile a detailed plan: long-term, medium-term, short-term, and daily — with a minute-by-minute daily schedule and home routine. Regular reassessment makes progress visible in data and allows the program to be adjusted. Home-based rehabilitation (at least 1 hour per day) is a required part of the course: specialists train parents in specific techniques and exercises.
Causes
May stem from perinatal CNS injury, genetic and metabolic factors, or prematurity. Often no single cause can be isolated — development lags across several domains at once.
Symptoms
The child lags in speech, motor function, cognition, and social skills. Unlike ASD, in GDD the order of stages is preserved — only the pace is slowed.
Assessment
The Gesell Scale and PEP are used; GMFM for motor issues, the S-S Method for speech. An individualized plan follows the assessment and is adjusted on reassessment.
Prognosis and Treatment Approach
The earlier intervention begins, the greater the catch-up potential. Work follows the GROW program (ages 1–14), plus a biomedical core and TCM methods.
